On the other hand, Magic Study brings several new story threads into play, and while they’re all quite interesting individually, the quick pacing of the story means that they’re frequently tangled up, and I often found it quite difficult to follow everything that was going on. It’s fast-paced (but not too fast-paced) and fascinating, and makes for an incredibly engrossing read. The story is something of a mixed bag: Poison Study is incredible, and follows Yelena as she learns to navigate the Commander’s court and all the political manoeuvring that’s going on within it, while at the same time coming to terms with her crime, and the events that drove her to commit it. It comprises three novels and two additional novellas: Poison Study (#1), Assassin Study (#1.5), Magic Study (#2), Fire Study (#3) and Power Study (#3.5). The Chronicles of Ixia is made up of three trilogies, of which the Study trilogy is the first. But what follows is more than just an exercise of tasting and identifying poisons – because Ixia’s capital is packed full of secrets and plots, and there may even be a war brewing with Sitia. Having been locked up in the Commander’s (the leader of the Ixian military dictatorship) dungeon for murder for the last year, Yelena is awaiting her execution, when she’s approached with an intriguing opportunity: The chance to become the Commander’s food taster instead. At this point, I wouldn’t recommend the Thier Bright Ascendacy series, having not liked The Tiger’s Daughter at all and having only a middling response to this one. But Rivera can turn a sweet phrase, offering some lovely single lines or segments of description. I still don’t find either story as told or the characters as presented particularly compelling, while pacing, POV, structure, and the over-wrought romance elements have been obstacles more often than not. The Ascendant Trilogy ebundle collects all three books in K Arsenault Rivera's epic fantasy- The Tiger's Daughter, The Phoenix Empress, and The Warrior Moon At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied. The question of cycles of gods and demons and ascendancy may actually be the most interesting facet for me at this point. On the one hand, I quite like the mythology that underlies much of the story even if it still feels a bit amorphous. Beyond plot, character, and pacing, I had mixed feelings about the worldbuilding. The novel starts slowly, and I almost gave it up several times in the first 100-150 pages.but things did pick up at about the halfway point as Shizuka moves more into the story of her being forced into the role of General by her uncle, tasked with leading what her uncle hoped would be a suicidal march into the north against land controlled by demons. It was first uploaded on the platform's "Canvas" section, where amateur webtoonists can showcase their works and get the chance to debut them on the platform as professional webtoonists if the works receive good responses from viewers. The author runs a fan group on facebook where she can often be found hanging out with her fans.Īmelia makes her home in the Pacific Northwest with her family. Hutchins considers herself to be a coffee addict as she drinks a lot of the “magical potion” that is coffee and uses the drink to help her create the magical worlds that inhabit her books. Sometimes her books do feature romance, but it is often about rising to a challenge or shaking up an entire world in order to find out who you really are. Instead, she looks to write fast-paced books that go hard against traditional standards. Her books are not strictly romance and doesn’t set out to write her books that way. Her books often features what she calls “alpha-hole” male characters who are then taken down a peg by the alpha women in her stories. She is the author of the Monsters series, The Fae Chronicles series, and Lacy of the Nine Realms series. Amelia Hutchins is a bestselling author of fantasy and paranormal romance novels. She was the only female character I enjoyed, the rest seeming rather hard-bitten and begrudging of Theodora's success, even her sisters. I liked Theodora a lot: I actually wished this was a first-person novel rather than third, though I did get to see and enjoy insight into Justinian as well. With it she makes a name, a fortune and a life she always believed was beyond her. Though the novel begins at age eleven for the protagonist, it is never immature or boring: I was captivated from the start. With a singer for an older sister (Comito) and a beautiful younger sister (Anastasia), Theo turns to her true talent: comedy. Not the best singer, not the best dancer or even the prettiest girl, Theodora commands attention and awe from her presence, her wit, her spirit and her sheer ambition. Duffy writes Theodora as a determined, intelligent and capable young woman. It is the Hippodrome that is the most important place in Theodora's life: her earliest memories, the death of her father at the hands of his beloved bear, and eventually the site of the greatest triumph of her life: her coronation. Her father was the bear trainer at the infamuous Hippodrome of Constantinople. Born the second daughter of three to Acacius and an unknown woman, named Hypatia for this novel, Theodora was born into showbusiness as it was then. Once there, the wedding week becomes a drama-filled mess and the dysfunctional family realizes that they have to mend their differences before their relationship is forever fractured.ĭuring this 1-on-1 interview with Collider, Platt talked about why this particular project was attractive to him when it came his way, the appeal of this character, what it’s like to have Janney play your mother, the brother-sister dynamic, how he personally feels about weddings, and shooting an awkwardly hilarious threesome. Siblings Alice ( Kristen Bell) and Paul ( Ben Platt) begrudgingly agree to accompany their mother (Allison Janney) to the English countryside where their estranged half-sister Eloise ( Cynthia Addai-Robinson) is getting married. Directed by Claire Scanlon and based on the book by Grant Ginder, the comedy The People We Hate at the Wedding follows a family who just can’t ever manage to see eye-to-eye. This felt like KJ’s very own sexy and skullduggerous take on the romcom trend, and I loved it.Ĥ.5 stars! □ *warning, fangirl gushing ahead, LOL* KJ Charles has never let me down. Add in a truly satisfying ending for literally every character in the book, and you’re left with what is basically a perfect quarantine read. The “I know you are fortune-hunting my niece and I’m going to prove it” element already had me giggling at the edge of my seat, but when Robin bamboozled poor, noble Hart by, I almost dissolved. I don’t know who I loved more - the secretly soft-hearted, fortune-hunting Robin Loxleigh, or the socially awkward, gruff and ferocious Hart, the uncle of Robin’s intended target.Īnd really, what a fantastic set up. If you are an especial fan of KJ’s Any Old Diamonds, or of Kim Secretan in The Will Darling Adventures, this one will be a new favourite for you - it certainly was for me. As always, KJ writes deeply loveable characters whose connections and motivations feel intensely human and believable. This book was an utter delight and dragged me right out of a slump. |
